課程概述

Course Description:
This is a weekly course which lasts two semesters. Building on students existing knowledge we will emphasize the skills they need most, namely listening and speaking

Course Objectives: Enhance students oral and listening skills while maintaining their reading skills. Improving students vocabulary. Enhancing pragmatic knowledge of English. Emphasis also on English cultural awareness
Enhance student oral fluency and listening skills. Also to enhance students discussion skills 

課程目標
1. well balanced development of language skills especially listening and speaking.
2. Learn new reading and listening techniques.
3. Improve paragraph and essay writing.
4. Acquire discussion skills.
5. Develop critical thinking skills.
6. Learn public speaking and presentation.
7. Examine and analyse important social issues and develop your opinions.
8. Practice and improve English test taking skills.  
課程要求
1. Regular class attendance. 1 unjustified absence = -5%; 2 = - 10%; 3 = -20%; 4 = FAIL (0%). (These are NTU regulations).
2. Give ONE group report (Powerpoint).
3. Design and perform ONE role play.
4. Organize ONE class discussion.
5. Show and comment on ONE video clip or documentary.
6. Complete SIX homework assignments and give to TA.
7. Write THREE essays

Attendance and participation 
10% 
Weekly attendance, arrive on time, stay till the end of class, bring text book, use English in class.

Essays 
10% 
Write THREE essays of at least one page, titles will be given at the beginning of the semester.

Assignment exercises

Complete SIX assignments taken from chapters 7-12 of text book. Give to TA every two weeks 
4. 
Report 
15% 
Make ONE 15 minute group report using Powerpoint. It will be judged on originality, comprehensibility, logic and coherency, ability to maintain audience interest. Your presentation skills also, clear speaking voice, eye contact, a correct and varied intonation according to the infomration being given. 
5. 
Role play 
5% 
Design, write and perform or film ONE role playing lasting 5 minutes. You write the plot yourselves, you may film it and show the film in class, but please add subtitles, or you may perform it in class, but it is better to film since the sub-titles aid understanding. 
6. 
Organize discussion 
5% 
Create topic and questions for ONE class discussion 
7. 
Oral test 
20% 
Prepare and perform a two-person 5 minute dialog. To be judged on fluency, pronunciation, intonation, contant, range and accuracy of grammar and vocabulary use

Final exam

100 MC questions on chapters 7-12 of text book

  Unit 9A Surival stories. Reading skill: scanning. Short reading: Survival in the Andes. Vocabulary building and comprehension. Listening comprehension: Surviving Sudan's civil war. Long reading: Finding Afghan survivors. Vocabulary and reading comprehension. Critical thinking: how can survivors stories be relevant to us and inspire us?

  Unit 10A Psychology: Human thinking: reading skills skimming. Short reading: Emotions and Memory. Vocabulary building and comprehension. Listening: Animal behavior: comprehension and vocabulary. Long reading: Animal intelligence: scanning, vocabulary practice and comprehension.
